Recent Events:
Kappa Volunteer Project - Knitting Circle: The members of the Knitting Circle are a group of students who teach each other to knit and make warm clothing items for needy children and adults. Last year we completed over 80 hats which were donated to Sarnelli House in Philadelphia, St. Anthony's Haven in Scranton, Peacemeal at St. Luke's in Scranton and Bethel AME seasonal shelter in Scranton! We are also working on a "group effort" blanket, which currently has 24 blanket squares ready.
Knitting Circle Meeting Times and Places:
Wednesday nights: UNC Bellevue center in West Scranton for their teen program. There are 4 dates set this semester from 6:30pm-8pm.
Thursday nights: Every other Thursday we are meeting in the new Madonna Hall movie lounge from 8:30pm-10pm to knit and watch Grey's Anatomy. We had a great turn-out last time and taught about 8 students how to knit. Everyone was given a project to take home.
Sundays: We are trying to set up afternoon knitting circles with the sisters at Our Lady of Peace, every other Sunday from 3pm-5pm.
18 new inductees were welcomed in April by Scranton chapter members in the lobby of Regina Hall at Marywood University! The St. Catherine medal was also awarded.
In May, steering committee members met to discuss volunteer work for the St. Joseph's Center, in Dunmore, PA. The center is an independent Catholic agency sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and it provides individuals and families who have special needs the opportunity to develop their abilities and potential to the fullest extent possible. Some of the services they provide include residential, community and home-based services, out patient therapy, maternity, family and adoption services.
Steering committee members also met with Mary Ann LaPorta of the Children's Advocacy Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania. It is a non-profit, charitable organization whose mission is to provide excellence in the assessment and treatment of child abuse and neglect. We discussed volunteer opportunities for the Center including a fundraising Moonlight Run.
